Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media also a speaker who is Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency, a site which features video and posts on the representations of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic, blogger and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are represented in pop culture. Aiming to dispel the myths that are associated with women in pop media, she is also working with issues that relate to the gender-specific harassment of women as well as different classes of individuals online. Sarkeesian is a graduate in the field of political and social thought from York University. As a public speaker, she is highly sought after and has been a speaker at TEDxWomen XOXO and United Nations Broadband Working Group. While a student at university Sarkeesian was concerned about issues related to gender and rights for women from a young age. An ambitious woman who wanted to launch a web-series that would examine the gender-based representation in video games, she was targeted by the internet campaign. However, the attacks did not dissuade her. She was only able to strengthen her position in her role as a feminist journalist. Numerous awards have been given to her for all of the contribution she has have made. Anita Sarkeesian is an award nominated media critic as well as the creator of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization focused on the portrayal of women within pop culture and the narratives that surround them.
